The Dyads

“Twins and doubling have been longstanding themes in my work for over a decade.

The symbolism of twins has appeared in countless lore of many cultures including Greek, Egyptian, Nigerian, Norse, and Afro-Carribean mythologies. The concept of Divine Twins is prevalent in the Indo-European traditions in religion, architecture, and literature. These dyads often represent the archetypal realm of universal duality, opposition, and imitation between the 'original' and 'otherness' in creation myths. Mythologist Jaan Puhvel has suggested that the Twins represent “the deepest layer” in our “mythological layer cake."

The dyads in my self-portrait work sometimes present as dual aspects of myself, while other portraits represent the lovers or different aspects of longing. Another aspect of this work is representation of female lovers. I feel there is little representation of women together in art in a romantic, emotive context existing outside of the male gaze. Many of these portraits seek to bridge this visual gap.”
